For Christmas, I sewed my preschooler a pair of flannel cow-print pajama pants to match a pair I made for myself a while back. Less-than-impressed is an understatement. But I am not deterred. Today I finished up this:

Again, the owner of the colored building blocks was not impressed, but I was excited. You see, I had the idea to do this about 6 months ago. I have scribbles all over with measurements from where I was trying to figure it out. I actually go so far as to sew the brown part of what you see in the picture, which actually goes down and lines the inside of the milk crate. Then I got stuck. I wasn’t sure how to finish it off because I had been using those wicker basket liners as a guide/inspiration. They sort of fold over the top of the basket and then maybe have a little casing with a ribbon that ties to secure the liner in place. But that wasn’t working for my ugly milk crate.

Then today, my train of thought happened to revisit Basket Liner Station and I started googling. I was this close to buying a $2 pattern when I found a perfect little tutorial on making exactly what I needed. The big solution was to have the liner come all the way down the outside and cover that dingy ole milk crate up completely.

My brown creation was about 9″ too short to accomplish this. But I had two long strips of cow print about 9″ wide just sitting there looking at me like, “duh.” So there you have it…

Now I want to make more. I’m going to line milk crates and pamper boxes and shoe boxes and just about any square container I can lay my hands on.

I don’t sew a lot, but I really do like it.
